Why iMessage is hard to archive
iMessage is the default way iPhone users text each other, so business conversations end up there whether a firm plans for it or not. A "no iMessage" policy doesn't remove that risk. It only hides it.
Apple says iMessages are protected with end-to-end encryption so only the sender and receiver can read them, and that Apple can't decrypt them. iMessages travel over the internet and Apple's own network, not the carrier's SMS text network, so carrier-based archiving never sees the blue-bubble or green-bubble RCS conversations.

The SEC has since brought more than 100 off-channel cases with penalties above $2 billion, and FINRA continues to bring its own cases. Financial firms were first, but the same duty applies anywhere a chat may be needed for an audit, an investigation or a litigation hold.
